Arnold Zellner
University of Chicago

Noon - 1:30 PM
The East Bank Club
500 N. Kingsbury, Chicago 60610

Join us for another celebration in the CCASA’s 2007-2008 Luncheon program.

Our December speaker is Arnold Zellner, Professor of Economics and Statistics at the University of Chicago.

Abstract

The use of Bayesian statistics in economics and in statistics has grown steadily over the last forty years. Over that time, Bayesian analysis has expanded to every area of statistical research, from quantification of uncertainty to factor analysis, data mining and decision making. There are two reasons that Bayesian statistics has experienced this sort of growth. The first is that the Bayesian posterior probability is a logical method of quantifying how new information changes our perceptions of the world. The second is that Bayesian models are extremely practical methods of actually estimating these probabilities. In this talk, some recent advances in this field will be discussed.

You can also learn more about Bayesian statistics and read many of Arnold Zellner’s papers by simply ‘Googling’ his name. I would especially recommend his 2005 address on Jim Press’ work, his 2006 paper on Bayesian statistics and econometrics, and his 2003 paper on Bayesian information processing. Professor Zellner has assured me that there will be no pop quizzes at the talk.

In addition, to celebrate the holiday season, it is possible, nay, even likely, that Statman (now renamed the more politically correct Statperson) will arrive to deliver holiday cheer. In addition, extremely valuable prizes will be awarded to attendees who can guess Statperson’s hat size and other questions of burning importance to the statistical world.
