Our speaker will be Stephen Stigler, University of Chicago talking on Isaac Newton and Dice
Next year is the 350th anniversary of the first printed work on mathematical probability, by Christian Huygens. The story of Isaac Newton's encounter with that work as a student is recalled, and an error Newton made in an evaluation of a gambling proposition put to him by Samuel Pepys is revealed.
