I'm reaching out to see if anyone has recommendations on deidentified codes for linking surveys. I'm working with a research group that is having a hard time with students following a template/code for creating a unique code for them to use for multiple surveys that they take in order to link their responses together without an identifier like email or student ID. The template code that has been used is below:
Last number of your cell phone number
1st letter of the month of your birthday
1st letter of the city of your birth
# of siblings in your family
The issue we are having is that the students are making a large number of errors in their code from the first to second survey and so we aren't able to link survey responses.
Has anyone had experience with addressing this type of issue and what code templates have worked well?
