entering into a consulting contract

  • 1.  entering into a consulting contract

    Hi Kenita,

Here are my recommendations for steps to be taken in order to enter into a consulting job.

    1. Make sure you and your client have a common understanding of what to be achieved. Some clients are good at describing their expectations in terms of a request (RFQ, ITT, RFP), scope of work (SOW), or similar.
    2. Make a written confirmation in terms of a proposal, typical containing

    -          your confirmation of what you are going to do for them (your answer to their request)

    -          dates for start and finish, and milestones during the project (depending on complexity and duration of project)

    -          terms for dealing with any irregularities,

    -          pricing (fixed price or per hour or other price formats)

    -          terms of payment

    -          what to be provided by client and what to be provided by you (typical would be software, data, data formats, etc)

    1. Get written confirmation from client to your proposal and use this as base for a contract. Sometimes clients will have a standard contract for jobs like this, make sure you are OK with the terms before signing the contract.

I have been in the consulting business for more than 20 years, I do combination of statistical consulting and business management consulting. Let me know if you have any other questions/comments.

    Hello,

I am new to the consulting world and I have a question about the steps a consultant would take when they have been asked to do a project for a company.

So, if a company comes to me and ask me to help out on a project...What are some of the initial steps or ground work that I will need to do before beginning the project?

    Thanks!
