I work in an academic medical setting where investigators are charged (at a subsidized rate) for data analysis. I provide quotes that have to be agreed to before work proceeds but these are not really contracts. I also have a listing of my expectations for the client (i.e., don't give me data with patient names). As for authorship, that is entirely independent of fees. I use the Uniform Requirements and I also use the scoring system in the Parker and Berman 1998 paper (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/%28SICI%291097-0258%2819981030%2917:20%3C2289::AID-SIM931%3E3.0.CO;2-L/pdf). I have found this quite helpful when working with staffers.

If as Parker and Berman suggest the terms 'consulting' and 'collaboration' beget differing (tacit) interpretations with respect to authorship, then I am beginning to wonder about our group's moniker!
