  • 1.  International Year of Statistics

    Posted 09-03-2012 18:38

Dear Members of the Section on Statistical Consulting:

As an elected representative of this section to the ASA Council of Sections, I signed up our Section on Statistical Consulting to be a participant in the International Year of Statistics http://www.statistics2013.org

Basically, the ASA and 660 other statistics organizations (including ours) have come together to declare 2013 the "International Year of Statistics," a worldwide celebration and recognition of the contributions of statistical science.

Below is the August newsletter for the International Year of Statistics. On a semi-related note, since the theme of JSM 2013 in Montreal is "Celebrating the International Year of Statistics", I am organizing a session on current initiatives to build statistical consulting capacity in developing countries. The title of the proposed session is, "Traveling Statisticians: Current Initiatives to Build Statistics Capacity in Developing Countries," and I'm looking for one more speaker. If you think you could give a great talk (~25 minutes) on this topic, please send me an email ASAP. The deadline for submitting invited session proposals is this Thursday.

    August Newsletter:

    Help Get the Word Out

Please distribute this newsletter to all of your appropriate networks.  You could help more by translating this information into your native language and distributing the translated version to others in your organization who will be helping you promote Statistics 2013 to your members and the public.

    Participation Continues to Grow!

As of August 24, there are 661 organizations, representing at least 94 countries, signed on as participants in the International Year of Statistics.  Participating organizations include 244 universities, 103 societies, 101 government agencies, 70 businesses, 69 ASA-affiliated entities, 52 secondary schools, and 22 research institutes.  If your organization has not signed on, please do so by going to http://statistics2013.org and clicking on "Join."  Joining creates no obligation, but it does connect you to the worldwide network of organizations and people who are interesting in promoting statistics through the unique opportunity of the International Year of Statistics.

    Follow Us!  Like Us!

If you want to receive up-to-date information on the International Year of Statistics through Twitter or Facebook, simply go to http://statistics2013.org and click on the appropriate icon at the top of the page.  Follow us on Twitter and be sure to retweet the messages to your followers.  Like or Comment on the Facebook page, and send us suggestions for new content for it.

Help Us Help You Promote Statistics2013!

ASA is developing a promotional plan and an accompanying Promotion Tool Kit that participating organizations can customize and use to promote the celebration and their involvement to their constituents and the public in their area or in their country. These promotional resources will encompass things like press releases, an opinion-editorial, print and online banner advertisements, and articles for your organization's website, newsletters or magazine that can be customized with your organization's information and a quote from your volunteer or staff leader. Other promotional items that will be included are electronic versions of the celebration's logo for posting on your organization's website; resources for promoting your organization's participation in Statistics2013 at your annual convention/meeting; and more. We'd like to hear from you about other promotional items you'd like to have included in the International Year of Statistics Promotion Tool Kit. Please email your suggestions, and an electronic sample of the item or a link to it on your organization's website, to Jeff Myers at Jeffrey@amstat.org. By working together to promote the International Year of Statistics we will educate the world about the important contributions statisticians everywhere are making to our global society.

Link to the International Year of Statistics

If your organization has not yet posted the International Year of Statistics logo and link to http://statistics2013.org on its website, you do not have to wait for the Promotion Tool Kit to do so.  You will find what you need at http://statistics2013.org/linktous.cfm.

    Activities during 2013

As your organization plans activities for 2013, send information about the plans to Ron Wasserstein (ron@amstat.org), and we will post the information on the Statistics2013 website. Please consider including the International Year of Statistics logo on your activity's website.

Speaking of activities, plans are in motion to develop a short video to help launch the International Year of Statistics.  We'll include more information about the video in future newsletters about Statistics2013.

    Statistics2013 Poster

We need your ideas!  We are developing posters that you can use throughout 2013 to promote the International Year of Statistics . Once created, these posters will be available for download at the Statistics2013 website for everyone to use.

At http://www.amstat.org/misc/IYSTATPoster.pdf you will see a concept for a poster.  We need your help to complete this poster! Please send me a note with at least one example of an important contribution statistics has made in your part of the world.  We'll select examples from around the world and highlight them in the "bubbles" on the poster. Then the posters will be made available to your organization for translation into your country's language.  (Please note the placement of the bubbles in the poster concept are for illustration purposes and will be moved to accommodate text length and number of examples.)

    Video Contest

Please help us to spread the word about the international video contest that will help launch the worldwide celebration of the positive impact of statistical science around the world.

We encourage your organization to submit a video of four minutes in length or less that illustrates:

    · how statistics positively impacts the lives  of your country's citizens, improves society, or in general makes the world a better place

    · how statistical thinking can be brought to bear on important issues of our day

    · interesting careers in statistics (tell the world why your job in statistics is so great, or why it is interesting and fun to be a statistician)

Cash prizes of $250 to $1000 (U.S. dollar) will be awarded for the best videos, with special prizes for the best videos by a person or a group of people 18 years of age or less and the best non-English language video.  (Please provide a written English translation of the video script or incorporate English subtitles into the finished production.)

Entries will be judged on statistical content and entertainment value. All submissions must be the original design and creation of the entrants and must not infringe on copyrighted materials or productions.  Submissions must be posted on YouTube. Send  a link to the video to Tom Short, chair of the Statistics2013 Video Contest review committee at tshort@jcu.edu, by October 31, 2012.

Winning and honorable-mention videos will be posted on the International Year of Statistics website throughout 2013.

How Your Organization Can Celebrate the International Year of Statistics

I am always asked: "What can my organization do to celebrate the International Year of Statistics?"  I am always ready to offer these suggestions:

o Have a special conference or add a component about the International Year of Statistics to your annual convention or meeting

o Hold special workshops or symposia on important topics in statistics in your area

o Have a "Day of Data" celebration (see examples at http://brown.edu/research/projects/digital-society/news/2012-05/may-18-day-data and http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/mc/page116754.html)

o Host events or develop materials that promote statistics careers to young people in your area or country

o Develop new educational materials that help improve some aspect of statistics instruction in your area or country.

o Spread the word in your area about the positive impact of statistics (get in your local news, write blogs on the web, distribute brochures - whatever works best for your organization)

o Publish special editions of your newsletters, journals or magazines related to Statistics2013

o Use the opportunity to create new partnerships and make new friends

    Posted 09-30-2012 21:42
Dear Members of the Section on Statistical Consulting:

It's worth considering how this Section on Statistical Consulting would like to celebrate the International Year of Statistics (Statistics 2013). Any ideas? Below is the latest newsletter that I've been asked to disseminate.

Here is the latest news about the International Year of Statistics.  Please remember to share this information with your colleagues (and not just departmental colleagues - please share with all those on your campus who love statistics).  Please also remember to send us your news.  Drop a note to Ron Wasserstein at ron@amstat.org, and we will promote your International Year of Statistics activities on the statistics2013.org website.

    Only Three Months to Go!

Tick, tick, tick!!! That's the sound as time quickly passes by, pushing us closer to Jan. 1 and the start of the International Year of Statistics.

That also means the time your organization has to prepare to share the news about the International Year of Statistics to internal and external audiences is dwindling as well.

Now is the time to draft an action plan and develop the essential resources needed to make your organization's Statistics2013 celebration truly memorable.

    Things to consider are:

    • How will you promote Statistics2013 on your website?
    • How will you connect with the public?
    • How will you connect with the media?
    • Are you planning a special event and, if so, how will you promote it?

As noted in last month's newsletter, Statistics2013 is developing a promotional tool kit for participating organizations that will be available by mid-November. It will provide tools your organization can use to promote the International Year of Statistics to the media and the public. You still will need to promote your organization-specific activities.

And, remember to let us know what plans your organization has in store so we can add them to the "Activities" list on the Statistics2013 website. Send the information to Ron Wasserstein at ron@amstat.org.

    Kudos for Promoting Statistics2013!

Last week we emailed all participating organizations a short promotional article and a Statistics2013 logo customized with a special "Participating Organization" tagline for posting to their websites. Many groups already have posted the article and/or the logo online. We want to share a couple of these posts with you:

    • Swedish Statistical Society
    • Weill Cornell Medical College (New York City, New York, United States)
    • Interuniversity Institute for Biostatistics and statistical Bioinformatics (Belgium)
    • Institute of Applied Statistics, Sri Lanka

Keep up the great work, everybody!

If your organization hasn't posted either item yet now is a great time to do so. You'll help build excitement about the International Year of Statistics among your organization's members as well as the public.

To get copies of the article and the logo contact Jeff Myers, ASA public relations coordinator, atJeffrey@amstat.org.

Get the Statistics2013 Logo in Your Language

We have created the International Year of Statistics logo in a few languages-French, Hindi, Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish).  If you want to use one of these logos, you can download the appropriate version at http://statistics2013.org/logos.cfm and post it on your site.  If you want us to create a logo for your organization in  a specific language, send us the wording in your language for "International Year of Statistics" and for "Participating Organization", and we will make language-specific versions of the logo with each tagline for you.

We need your statistics public-education, career resources

Statistics2013 is developing a public website that will feature a range of interesting informational content about statistics, how the work of statisticians impacts our global society as well as careers in statistics.

We would like to obtain samples of your organization's public-education and career resources-both online and traditional tools-so we can spotlight the information on www.Statistics2013.org during the yearlong observance. Your organization will be credited as the source if your information is posted on the website. Items we would like to receive are your country-specific website links, brochures, videos, photos and more.  Naturally, these items do NOT have to be in English.

Your organization's informational resources will help give the Statistics2013 website a truly international flavor during the International Year of Statistics! So send us your resources today. The public website will launch Jan. 1.

Submit your samples to ASA Public Relations Coordinator Jeff Myers at Jeffrey@amstat.org or via regular mail at:

    Jeff Myers

    American Statistical Association

    732 North Washington Street

    Alexandria, VA, USA 22314-1943

    Video Contest

Please help us to spread the word about the international video contest that will help launch the worldwide celebration of the positive impact of statistics.

We encourage your organization to submit a video of four minutes in length or less that illustrates:

    • how statistics positively impacts the lives of your country's citizens, improves society, or in general makes the world a better place
    • how statistical thinking can be brought to bear on important issues of our day
    • interesting careers in statistics (tell the world why your job in statistics is so great, or why it is interesting and fun to be a statistician)

Cash prizes of $250 to $1,000 (U.S.) will be awarded for the best videos, with special prizes for the best videos by a person or a group of people 18 years of age or less and the best non-English language video.  (Please provide a written English translation of the video script or incorporate English subtitles into the finished production.)

Entries will be judged on statistical content and entertainment value. All submissions must be an original production and creation of the entrants and must not infringe on copyrighted materials or productions.  Submissions must be posted on YouTube.

To enter the competition, simply send a link to your video to Tom Short, chair of the Statistics2013 Video Contest review committee, at tshort@jcu.edu, by October 31, 2012.

Winning and honorable-mention videos will be posted on the International Year of Statistics website throughout 2013.

    And Speaking of Video...

The Statistics2013 Steering Committee and others are developing a video about the importance of Statistics that is aimed at young people, encouraging them to consider Statistics as a career.  We hope to have this video ready for your use by the start of 2013.  We will keep you posted on progress.

Workshop on the Future of Statistical Science Research

An international organizing committee is developing plans for an invited workshop that will promote the research agenda for Statistics over the next several years.  The workshop is expected to be held in November or December 2013 in London. Again, we will keep you up-to-date on progress of this important International Year of Statistics activity.

Amazing Growth in Statistics2013 Participation Continues!

As of September 20, 805 organizations representing at least 95 countries have signed on as participants for the International Year of Statistics.  One hundred-forty of these organizations joined in the past month!  If your organization has not signed on, please do so today by going to http://statistics2013.org and clicking on "Join."  Joining creates no obligation, but it does connect you to the worldwide network of organizations and people who will be promoting statistics throughout the International Year of Statistics.

    How to Get This Newsletter

If you are not regularly receiving this monthly newsletter, or if your colleagues would like to receive it, encourage them to go to http://statistics2013.org and click on "Get the Newsletter".

International Year of Statistics Newsletter - October 25, 2012

Hungarian Group to Promote Statistics in Unique Setting

The Hungarian Statistical Association (HSA) will be promoting statistics in a unique setting next year. For a week, HSA will establish a "Statistical Base" at the popular Skanzen Open Air Museum in Szentendre where its statistician members will be stationed in the seven areas representative of Hungary's regions.

Throughout the setting, HSA members will present posters and statistical leaflets and talk to museum visitors about how statistics impacts their lives. The museum is a symbol of rural Hungary and is a famous attraction for Hungarians and foreign tourists alike. "The choice of the place creates an environment that will hopefully help us to show and prove that statistics are not merely numbers or tables but are rooted in the everyday life of the people," says Éva Laczka, HSA secretary general.

Tell us about your organization's plans to celebrate the International Year of Statistics and to promote the contributions of statistics to your country's citizens. We'll share your plans with other participating organizations. Please send a summary to ron@amstat.org.

Kudos to Westat, CAUSE for sponsoring Statistics2013

When the public-focused website of the International Year of Statistics is unveiled later this year it will include a fun feature titled "A World Without Statistics".

Sponsored by Westat and the Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education(CAUSE), the monthly website series will explore what the world would be like without statistics. In this featured section a cartoon illustration will picture a scenario of how an aspect of everyday life we take for granted would be adversely affected if statistics were not used. Also, an accompanying short article will elaborate on how statistics contributes to that area and makes our lives easier and better.

The members of the International Year of Statistics Steering Committee express their gratitude to Westat and CAUSE for supporting Statistics2013 and this powerful website promotional resource.

If your organization would like to sponsor an International Year of Statistics event or website item, please contact Ron Wasserstein at ron@amstat.org.

North Maharashtra University becomes the 1,000th participant

ENBIS Greenfield Challenge Going International in 2013

In celebration of the International Year of Statistics, the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics' (ENBIS) Greenfield Challenge is going international in 2013. The award recognizes statisticians who tell an outside audience about his or her work in statistics and thereby raise awareness of the public about the contributions of statistics to society. The communication can be through direct contact such as a presentation or an article in a publication.

John Wiley & Sons, Inc.-the Greenfield Challenge sponsor-has increased substantially the award prize budget and may further increase it if the number and quality of submissions surpass expectations.

The award submission deadline is May 31. To learn more about the Greenfield Challenge, past honorees and the award criteria, go to http://www.enbis.org/activities/greenfield_challenge?_ts=91594. The Greenfield Challenge Committee will choose the most outstanding submissions to be awarded and presented at ENBIS's annual meeting in Ankara, Turkey next year.

  • 4.  RE:International Year of Statistics

    Posted 11-08-2012 17:14

Dear Members of the Section on Statistical Consulting:

International Year of Statistics Newsletter - November 8, 2012

Mexican Groups See Unique Opportunities to Promote Statistics2013

Our colleagues in Mexico are trying a couple of interesting ways to promote the International Year of Statistics.  Those are:

    1) Approach a symphonic or chamber-music orchestra, or a soloist in your area and propose an International Year of Statistics Commemorative Concert, with a possible short conference before the concert. Approaching music departments or schools is another possibility.

    2) Some countries have old-style legal lotteries where print-lottery bills are still used. Ask officials to include a commemorative bill for the International Year of Statistics. This promotional idea is usual for many commemorative events (at least in Mexico). In addition, one could prepare some explanation about probability and expectation for the public as promotion of the lottery drawing.

The Université de Moncton will celebrate the International Year of Statistic in style

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Université de Moncton in Canada will use Statistics2013 to showcase the strong relations between Statistics and other disciplines of study. An inter-faculty committee, chaired by Dr. Thu Pham-Gia, professor of the department of Math-Stat, began its work last summer, with Prof. Paul Deguire, chair of the department, and Donald Violette as advisors.

Celebrations will begin this month and will consist of two parts:

    1)      Local Celebrations: Ten conferences/presentations are planned for 2013 in Moncton, with speakers coming from Biology, Computer Science, Statistics,  Civil Engineering, Environment , Pedagogy and Linguistics .

    2)      International Celebration: A conference, titled "Statistics and Its Interactions with Other Disciplines", will be held in collaboration with four Vietnamese universities in Ho Chi Minh City, VietNam, on June 5 to 7. Nine professors from the Université de Moncton will be on different scientific committees, which include more than 25 world experts. The conference has received the support of several organizations, including ISBIS, ISBA, Minitab, Pfizer, Sanofi-Pasteur et TD Bank, and speakers of international reputation will be at the conference.

    Registration is now open here.

Amstat NewsSignificance Magazine to have Features & Posters

The International Year of Statistics will be featured in upcoming issues of the American Statistical Association's (ASA)Amstat News and Significance magazine, a joint publication of the ASA and the Royal Statistical Society in Great Britain.

The January issue of Amstat News will feature a Statistics2013 kick-off article by ASA Executive Director Ron Wasserstein as well as a special pull-out promotional poster. Additionally, Editor Megan Murphy will be promoting Statistics2013 throughout next year with special articles each month.

In February, Significance magazine will spotlight the International Year of Statistics with a special the cover. Inside the commemorative issue readers will find a poster of the cover that they can pull out and post in a public area.

We encourage you to check out each magazine, pass the issues around your offices, and use the pull-out posters to promote the International Year of Statistics.

    Help Make Statistics2013 Website Global

The International Year of Statistics Steering Committee is seeking content contributions in several subject areas from participating organizations for the Statistics2013 public website. Those areas and a brief explanation of each are:

    1.      Statistic of the Day-A series of four or five brief, informative statistical facts about your country, for example, its population, economy and education system; the health of its citizens; and similar social, economic, government and other relevant topics.

    2.      Around the World in Statistics-A short 150 to 200 word article about how statistics makes life better for the people of your country.

    3.      Statistician Job of the Week-A short 150 to 250 word article written by one of your organization's members talking about his/her job as a statistician and how he/she is contributing to improving our global society.

    4.      Statistics in Action-A photo with a brief caption that shows how statistics improves the quality of life of your country's people.

    5.      Careers Information-The hyperlink to the statistics career information that is posted on your organization's website.

    6.      Educational Resources-The hyperlink to the primary and secondary school statistics education resources that are posted on your organization's website.

Your contributions will help make the International Year of Statistics website a worldwide representation of the reach and impact of statistics. The Statistics2013 public website will be launched soon, so send us your content or links as soon as possible.

To contribute, email the items to Jeffrey@amstat.org.

    U.S. Government Agencies Promoting Statistics2013

Numerous U.S. government statistical agencies are promoting Statistics2013 on their websites. Here's a sampling:

A special thank you goes out to these agencies for a job well-done in helping to spread the word about the International Year of Statistics to the public and to their internal audiences and raising awareness of statistics to their industry's key stakeholders.

    Statistics Cloud Image Available

We have posted the popular statistics cloud artwork (the graphic with the word "statistics" in various languages) online atwww.statistics2013.org where you can download and use it in your promotional materials.

You could use it on your website, on printed materials and banners to name a few ideas. Get creative and share your ideas with us at Jeffrey@amstat.org. We will pass them on to the more than 1,200 other participating organizations around the world.

To access and download the graphic go here.
