    Dear Colleagues,

The JSM 2012 in San Diego is soon approaching, so it is our pleasure to invite you to attend our upcoming invited panel session at this conference - "Solo Consulting: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly".

The session will take place on Wednesday, August 1st, 2012 from 8:30 AM to 10:20 AM in Room 31A of the San Diego Convention Centre (CC), located at 111 West Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101.

The session will feature the following distinguished panelists:
    • William B. Fairley, Analysis & Inference, Inc.
    • David Ray Bristol, Statistical Consulting Services Inc.
    • MaryJo O. Smith, Ypsilon Associates
    • Michael Chernick , Lankenau Institute for Medical Research
    • Heather Krause, Datassist

Biographical sketches of each panelist are enclosed at the end of this e-mail.  Please make a note of the e-mail address of each panelist in case you would like to follow up with them after the session.

The abstract for our invited panel session is as follows:

"Solo statistical consultants are the first to admit that this profession has its fair share of the good, the bad and the ugly. The good aspects of solo consulting touch on continued professional growth, building rewarding and enriching relationships with clients and colleagues and achieving professional success. The bad aspects include uncertainty regarding the source of the next project and the burden of professional or personal isolation. The ugly aspects tap into client conflicts, project failures and ethical disputes. This session will provide an honest yet constructive look into all three aspects of statistical consulting by means of personal stories, experiences, insights and advice shared by the seasoned panel members. Regardless of whether or not they are sole practitioners, consultants attending this session will walk away feeling that they are not alone in experiencing the three facets of statistical consulting and knowing that they could immediately adopt some steps to enhance their chances of experiencing the good side of consulting and minimize the risk of experiencing the downside of consulting."

The session is featured in the online JSM Program at http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2012/onlineprogram/AbstractDetails.cfm?abstractid=303833.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our session in San Diego and to receiving any questions you might have related to this session!

    Sincerely,

    Isabella R. Ghement, Ph.D.
Session Chair for the Invited Panel Session "Solo Consulting:  The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", JSM 2012
