It is a division of Bertelsmann AG, one of the foremost media companies in the world.  We currently have opportunities for analysts and developers within our Strategy and Analytics group in our corporate headquarters, located in the heart of Manhattan.  In a time of rapid change throughout the book publishing industry, the need for developing a sophisticated understanding of the marketplace will be essential to the company's success.  This position will play a key role in furthering these capabilities at Random House.

     

    Job description

     

    This is a temporary position until the end of 2012. Extension of the term or longer-term employment would be dependent on continued business need, as well as performance.

    As Quantitative Analyst and Developer you will be part of the Strategy and Analytics team, whose role it is to derive insights from the company's data and make recommendations about the company's strategy. The initial focus of the position will be implementing existing analytical processes in R, though there may be opportunities to create and design analytical frameworks. Depending on the scope of the project, you will be responsible for executing analysis, automating analysis procedures, and deriving insights that can drive business results. 

    Types of analysis could include: pricing experiments; quantifying the impact of various marketing channels; defining consumer segments; and analyzing data from social media.

     

    Job requirements

     

    Ideal candidates will exhibit the following skills:

     

    • Degree in statistics, applied math, computer science, or related field (Bachelor's, Master's)
    • Minimum of two years of relevant experience (analysis, software development)
    • Significant experience with R
    • Significant experience with SQL
    • Experience querying (and preferably building/maintaining) databases
    • Ability to validate results, both on a small scale (attention to detail) and on a large scale (reasonableness of mid-process output and final results)
    • Ability to quantify and analyze business issues and opportunities
    • Logical problem solving skills and data-based decision making skills
    • Ability to work independently
    • Ability to prioritize, plan, and execute projects
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
