  • 1.  JSM 2010 - Any social events scheduled?

    Posted 07-03-2010 20:59
    Hi everyone,

I am wondering if the ASA Statistical Consulting section has scheduled any informal events (e.g., lunch or dinner, meetings) during the upcoming JSM 2010 in Vancouver?  If not, is there any interest amongst members of this section in getting together for an informal dinner during one of the conference evenings?

    Kind regards,

    Isabella

    Hi everyone,

A while ago, I sent out an e-mail to gauge the level of interest among
the members of the Statistical Consulting Section in attending an informal
dinner for statistical consultants during JSM 2010 in Vancouver, Canada.
The dinner is meant to provide us with a platform for meeting other like-minded people
in a casual setting and for exchanging ideas, stories and experiences that
colour our lives as statistical consultants.

If your JSM schedule allows you to join the dinner, can you please e-mail me by
Wednesday, August 28, 2010 at isabella@ghement.ca with your RSVP?

The coordinates of the dinner are provided below.

    Date: 4 August, 2010 (Wednesday)

    Time: 6:00pm

    Location: Water Street Cafe
              300 Water Street
              Vancouver, B.C.
              V6B 1B6
              http://www.waterstreetcafevancouver.ca/

Once I get your confirmations, I will make the appropriate reservations with the restaurant.

For those of you who are not familiar with Vancouver, the Water Street Cafe is located in
Gastown, within walking distance of the conference site.  Gastown is a very vibrant area of
Vancouver, which is popular with locals and tourists alike (http://www.gastown.org/). One of
its famous landmarks is the Gastown Steam Clock, built in 1977 based on an 1875 design.
The clock is powered by steam from an underground systems of pipes that supply steam to heat
    many downtown buildings.

I look forward to hearing from you!

    Kind regards,

    Isabella

    Hi everyone,

Thank you very much for your responses to my e-mail.  I am happy to confirm that the proposed dinner for statistical consultants attending JSM 2010 in Vancouver will go ahead as planned.  We'll have a dinner party of 15 participants, as follows:

    1) Jonathan Berkowitz

    2) Rick Ittenbach

    3) Terry Germanson

    4) Eric Vance

    6) Naomi Robbins

    7) William Fairley

    8) Ji-Hyun Lee

    9) Ji-Hyun Lee's guest

    10) Tony Thrall

    15) Isabella Ghement

If you have e-mailed me to express your interest in attending the dinner but cannot find your name on the above list, please drop me a line at isabella@ghement.ca as soon as possible.  On the evening of the dinner, I'll have my cell phone with me so you can call me at 604-767-1250 in case you need help or directions.

The restaurant has reserved 15 dinner spots for us.   Because our dinner party is relatively small, we can order from the regular (a la carte) menu instead of a set menu.  The cost of the food will be subject to 12 % HST; on top of this, the restaurant will charge each of us a 15% gratuity fee.  I believe the alcoholic drinks may be subject to a slightly different tax regime.  Let me know if you would like me to look into this for you.

Once again, here are the dinner details.

    Date: 4 August, 2010 (Wednesday)

    Time: 6:00pm

    Location: Water Street Cafe

              http://www.waterstreetcafevancouver.ca/

Parking:  Canada Place Parkade (http://www.vinciparkcanadaplace.ca/) or on the street

Wishing you all a safe trip to Vancouver!

    See you at the dinner!

    Kind regards,

    Isabella

P.S.  Thank you to those of you who informed me that they would have liked to come but are unable to because of various reasons.  After the dinner, I will try to post an update on this list to help give you a flavour for the dinner atmosphere and discussions.

    Hi everyone,

Just an update - our dinner party for JSM consultants (Wed., Aug. 4th, 6:00pm, Water Street Cafe, Vancouver) now includes 19 participants.   The restaurant confirmed that both food and drinks are subject to 12% HST and then 15% gratuity.  Because our party is fairly big, the restaurant is asking for our patience in terms of waiting for food to be served, especially if they are going to have a busy evening.  Please drop me a line if you'd like to meet in front of the Vancouver Convention Centre at some point before 6:00pm - say, 5:30pm - and then walk together to the restaurant.  Once you make your way to the restaurant, please ask for the party organized by Isabella so that you can be directed to the appropriate room.

Here is the updated list of dinner participants:

    1) Jonathan Berkowitz

    2) Rick Ittenbach

    3) Terry Germanson

    4) Eric Vance

    5) Sandra Stinnett

    6) Naomi Robbins

    7) William Fairley

    8) Ji-Hyun

    9) Ji-Hyun's guest

    10) Tony Thrall

    11) Sam Woolford

    12) Page Moore

    13) Nate Derby

    14) Dave Schoenfeld

    15) Isabella Ghement

    16) Margaret Nemeth

    17) Elizabeth Newton

    18) Richard Bolton

    19) Charles Kincaid

Looking forward to seeing you all at the dinner!

    Kind regards,

    Isabella
