    Hi,

    Can anyone point me to a good introductory book on the statistical analysis of microarray data?  Preferably a book that is practical/applicable rather than theoretical.  Thanks!  ---Harry

    Good luck with that Harry.  A quick look at one of the most recent books out (Methods Of Microarray Data Analysis VI by Patrick McConnell, Simon M. Lin, A. Jamie Cuticchia 

    ISBN-10: 1441483675 ISBN-13: 978-1441483676) will show you that there are no standardized analysis methods for microarrays.

    The biggest problem facing microarray data is the lack of replication.  Once array manufacturers and user come to grips with that, then good experimental design methods (ANOVA) will suffice.

    If you do come across a particularly helpful book on this topic, please share.  We are in much need of it as there are few statisticians well versed in this field.

    It is difficult to call any description of this complex discipline 'introductory'.  For your consideration, some books that I have found helpful in better understanding the statistical analyses of microarray data are listed below, in order of increasing complexity:

    Gene Expression Studies Using Afymetrix Microarrays - by Gohlmann H. and Talloem, W. - CRC Press Chapman/Hall 2009   isbn 978-1-4200-6515-2

    Statistical Analysis of Gene Expression Microarray Data - Edited by Terry Speed - Chapman & Hall/CRC, 2003  1-58488-327-8  (Note: Dr. Speed presented a workshop at the Joint Statistical Meetings on this topic a few years ago.)

    Bioconductor Case Studies - by Hahne, F.  et. al.   Springer 2008  (see www.bioconductor.org)

    Bioinformatics and Computation Biology Solutions using R and Bioconductor - by Gentleman, R., et.al.  Springer   (see  www.bioconductor.org)

    The last 2 books are written by developers of R and Bioconductor, to help the reader apply the concepts using the R freeware for bioinformatics: bioconductor.
