I need to find a consultant who can apply the Coal Miner's Distance as a metric to compare globule size distribution between two pharmaceutical products (i.e. generic vs. brand).  Please let me know and I can put you in touch with several pharmaceutical companies who need someone with this statistical expertise.

    Hi Charles,

I Googled "Coal Miner's Distance" (with quotes), and all I got was this link:

Carp Fishing Tackle For Sale On Ebay - Flashlightinc.xyz

When I did it without the quote marks, I got 504,000 results, but the first two pages did not have anything statistical.

Now I am curious. What is the Coal Miner's Distance?

    Thank you,

    Nayak

    All,

We are asked about these 'Banana Moon' Techniques on a regular basis.  We must refer them to a Statistical Dictionary.

I Googled "Banana Moon" and all I got was links to a shopping site and pictures of women in swimwear.  This thread is getting weirder by the minute.

    Christopher,

Exactly the point, there are these made up names for techniques that do not exist or already have a name in the Statistical Dictionary.

Is "coal miner's distance" the length of a chord (an imaginary tunnel through the earth) between two points on the surface?

Perhaps "Coal Miner's Distance" is an alternative name for "Earth Mover's Distance"?  EMD is a metric on probability distributions, also known as the Wasserstein metric.  See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_mover%27s_distance for a description and references.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request.  I am sorry my brain went on the fritz when I indicated the method was the Coal Miner's Distance instead of the correct one, the Earth Mover's Distance.  One of the early responses I received indicated that their group could handle this, so I passed along their contact information to my clients who needed help in this area.  I will be sure to post requests for help when I get one from a client who needs something that is outside of my area of expertise.
