  • 1.  Announcement for JSM2017 Roundtables

    Posted 10-17-2016 14:43

    Hi everyone,

I have been debating about whether I should send out this announcement in the midst of the lively discussion about the FUTURE of our section. However, since the clock is ticking, please allow me a moment to make you aware of the events for JSM2017.

My name is Xiaoyue Maggie Niu and I have been appointed as program chair for JSM 2018. I will be organizing the roundtable discussions for JSM 2017. I am very excited to have this opportunity and get to know more members in our section.

    Below is the announcement:

The Statistical Consulting Section of the ASA is looking for knowledgeable and engaging speakers who can lead a roundtable discussion at JSM 2017 in Baltimore, Maryland.

JSM 2017 will offer two types of roundtable discussions: A.M. (7:00am - 8:15am) and P.M. (12:30pm - 1:50pm).   The discussions will take place on July 31st, August 1st and 2nd, 2017 (i.e., Monday - Wednesday).  Participants in a roundtable discussion will receive a continental breakfast (A.M. Roundtables) or a hot entrée lunch (P.M. Roundtables) and take part in a stimulating discussion.  A single roundtable is limited to a maximum of 10 people, including the discussion leader.

Each roundtable has a designated topic and a discussion leader.  The discussion leader engages the participants in lively conversation around the proposed topic and can distribute materials to the participants (e.g., handouts, references) which can help guide the discussion.

The topic of a roundtable discussion could be either stand-alone or connected with the topic of a JSM 2017 session.  It is important to note that you can lead a roundtable and give a main presentation.

Roundtable discussions are ticketed events but, if your topic is selected for inclusion in the JSM 2017 program, our section will pay for your ticket.  The ticket price covers the cost of the meal.

Please contact me before December 1st, 2016 (xiaoyue@psu.edu) if you would like to lead a roundtable discussion.  In your e-mail, be sure to include your chosen topic along with a brief motivation of why you think the topic is important and timely and how it will benefit the participants. The proposals that are received will be judged by Executive Committee of the Section on Statistical Consulting.

The winners will be notified and will be asked to submit their finalized abstracts to the ASA during the Contributed Abstract submission period (December 1, 2016 12:01am - February 1, 2017 11:59pm).   Abstracts should be short (two or three sentences) and should provide a description of the topic of discussion. The ASA rules state that there should be one speaker for each Roundtable and that speakers are required to register for JSM prior to abstract submission.

    Thank you very much!

    Best,

    Dear members,

We are going to extend our section's JSM 2017 Roundtable proposal deadline to Dec 15, 2016. If you have an idea or have any questions, feel free to contact me at xiaoyue@psu.edu.

The roundtable discussion is an excellent opportunity to show the ASA community how much fun we have in practicing statistical consulting. Don't let the opportunity pass.
