I am a member of this section and also the ASA Committee on Applied Statisticians (CAS). The CAS social mixer at JSM last year attracted over 75 applied statisticians, at different stages of their career and from various industries/academia, to network and share applied statistical interest. We hope to facilitate networking within the applied statistical community and foster collaborative opportunities with other ASA sections for future JSM applied sessions.
Our committee is hosting the social mixer again at JSM on Tuesday August 2, 2011. Light refreshments will be provided. We welcome you to attend, mingle, and exchange ideas for future Joint Statistical Meetings.

For your reference, CAS has the following items in its current charge:
- Promote forums showcasing relevant technologies and emerging methods benefiting applied statisticians.
- Facilitate the recognition of applied statisticians within various fields of application.
- Coordinate with other ASA groups/units to ensure attention to the needs, priorities and career paths of applied statisticians.
- Increase awareness and promote careers in applied statistics.
In addition, CAS is also actively involved in organizing sessions that would benefit applied statisticians. This year's panel discussion organized by the committee would benefit young statisticians who are interested in learning more about the role and responsibilities of applied statisticians from the experiences of other statisticians with background working in Government, Academia, or industry.
