Hi everyone,
This is an invitation for you to start thinking about putting together invited session proposals for JSM 2016, which will be held in Chicago between July 30 and August 4, 2016 under the theme "The Extraordinary Power of Statistics".
Invited session proposals for JSM 2016 can be submitted to ASA by Thursday, September 3, 2015 (11:59 p.m. Eastern, 9:59 p.m. Pacific) via the website:
http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2016/invitedsessions.cfm.
All invited session proposal submissions must be submitted as "competition."
To organize an invited session, you need to first identify a theme of broad interest for the members of our consulting section and then identify and contact potential participants. Based on the recent interest it generated among members of our section, perhaps an invited session dedicated to the use and abuse of p-values may be beneficial? What other themes would be of interest to our membership and have been under-represented at recent JSM conferences? What good practices in statistical consulting would be impactful if shared with our membership? (The invited session themes do not have to adhere necessarily to the JSM 2016 conference theme.) If you are planning on attending JSM 2015 in Seattle, you will likely find inspiration for relevant themes after attending various events and meeting with like-minded colleagues.
Invited sessions can be oral presentations or panel discussions. An invited paper session consists of two to six people, including speakers and discussants. For an invited panel, the session consists of three to six people who provide commentary, discussion and engaging debate on a particular topic of contemporary interest. All invited sessions are 110 minutes in length and have a session chair. Please see this article for more information about invited sessions:
http://magazine.amstat.org/blog/2015/07/01/jsm-2016-invited-session-proposals-sought/.
To submit your invited session proposal online by the September 3, 2015 deadline, you will need to have the following information:
- Session Type (invited)
- Session Subtype (e.g., paper or panel)
- Primary Sponsor (Select Section on Statistical Computing from the pull-down menu provided)
- Title of Session
- Session Description – please provide the following information in this field:

If you encounter any problems with the online system, please contact Naomi Friedman at naomi@amstat.org">naomi@amstat.org.
When planning your invited session, please note that JSM has strict guidelines for participation, which are available at http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2016/guidelines.cfm. Please talk to potential speakers to ensure they are not committing to multiple invited sessions.
