Dear Members of the ASA Section on Statistical Consulting (CNSL):

The Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) are coming up next month. Our section has a great program lined up with excellent talks, workshops, sessions, roundtables, panels, and posters. Our Program Chair Kim Love-Myers will be publicizing the CNSL-sponsored sessions closer to the start of JSM. You can also search the online program here: 2015 Joint Statistical Meetings - Statistics: Making Better Decisions. - Seattle, Washington

I wanted to highlight a special event so those attending JSM will put it onto their calendars. On Tuesday, August 11 from 5:30-7:30PM we will have our section business meeting and mixer. Everyone should try to attend this event! I’ve ordered lots of good food (Chinese dim sum, a Northwest Sampler, and vegetables with guacamole and aioli) and the first 75 attendees will receive one free drink ticket for the cash bar. This will be in the Sheraton Hotel Jefferson Room B.

The mixer will start with socializing. Most JSM attendees don’t know each other, so it’s encouraged to just start talking with folks at the mixer. We’ll interrupt briefly for some business matters and updates about the section. We’ll continue with more socializing punctuated by the awarding of the section prizes and a few door prizes.

An event requiring pre-registration that may be of interest to section members is the two-day workshop, “Nontechnical Skills to Become a More Effective Collaborator.” Led by Eric Vance, Heather Smith, and Doug Zahn, this practical workshop will help you become a more effective collaborator to solve real-world problems and implement solutions. The first half will help you learn and practice how to structure and conduct effective, efficient meetings with clients and colleagues. The second half will guide you through key communication skills essential for success as a statistician. Throughout this workshop, you will practice these nontechnical skills in groups. You also will learn how to analyze video data taken during meetings with clients to systematically improve your collaboration skills. The methods you learn and practice in this workshop will assist you in your efforts to improve your effectiveness as you serve in all your professional roles.

Hope to see you next month in Seattle!
