  • 1.  Speakers needed for leading roundtable discussions at JSM 2015

    Posted 11-25-2014 15:10

    Hi everyone,

    Our section is looking for knowledgeable and engaging speakers who can lead a roundtable discussion at JSM 2015 in Seattle, Washington.

    JSM 2015 will offer two types of roundtable discussions: A.M. (7:00am - 8:15am) and P.M. (12:30pm - 1:50pm).   The discussions will take place on August 10th, 11th and 12th, 2015 (i.e., Monday - Wednesday).  Participants in a roundtable discussion will receive a continental breakfast (A.M. Roundtables) or a hot entrée lunch (P.M. Roundtables) and take part in a stimulating discussion.  A single roundtable is limited to a maximum of 10 people, including the discussion leader.

    Each roundtable has a designated topic and a discussion leader.  The discussion leader engages the participants in lively conversation around the proposed topic and can distribute materials to the participants (e.g., handouts, references) which can help guide the discussion.

    The topic of a roundtable discussion could be either stand-alone or connected with the topic of a JSM 2015 session.  It is important to note that you can lead a roundtable and give a main presentation.

    Roundtable discussions are ticketed events but, if your topic is selected for inclusion in the JSM 2015 program, our section will pay for your ticketThe ticket price covers the cost of the meal.

    Abstracts for JSM 2015 Roundtables will have to be submitted by speakers during the Contributed Abstract submission period (December 2, 2014 - February 2, 2015).   Abstracts should be short (two or three sentences) and should provide a description of the topic of discussion.

    The ASA rules state that there should be one speaker for each Roundtable and that speakers are required to register for JSM prior to abstract submission.

    Please contact me before December 2nd, 2014 (isabella@ghement.ca) if you would like to lead a roundtable discussion.  In your e-mail, be sure to include your chosen topic along with a brief motivation of why you think the topic is important and timely and how it will benefit the participants.

    Many thanks,

    Isabella

    What's the Difference Between Data Science and Statistics? - Charles Kincaid, Experis

    What's the Difference Between Data Science and Statistics?

    Author(s):

    Charles Kincaid*+

    Companies:

    Experis

    Keywords:

    Big Data ; Data science ; Statistics ; Career

    Abstract:

    There is great excitement today about data scientists, Big Data, and analytics. The demand for data scientists and Big Data professionals is high, far outweighing the supply of qualified professionals. Is this excitement carrying over to our profession? Are statisticians perceived with the same potential for contributions to the business as data scientists? Do statisticians actually have the same potential for contributions to the business as data scientists? This roundtable is intended for statistical consultants who want to learn more about data science and those who want to share their own experiences. What are the differences between statisticians and data scientists? We will discuss the differences between the two roles with regard to their backgrounds, responsibilities, and work products. Come with questions, thoughts, experiences, and challenges.

    Academic Collaborative Statistics - Benjamin Goldstein, Stanford University

    Academic Collaborative Statistics

    Author(s):

    Benjamin Goldstein*+

    Companies:

    Stanford University

    Keywords:

    Collaboration ; Consulying ; Career

    Abstract:

    Statistics is an interdisciplinary field that requires working with subject-matter experts, making collaborative relationships both important and rewarding. In the age of "team science," many of the dynamics between collaborators are changing, and a tension can exist between collaborative and methodological projects. During this roundtable, we hope to discuss such questions as: What do you look for in a collaborator/collaborative project? How does one balance collaborative and methodological projects? Is there a difference between collaboration and consulting? Should one prioritize publishing in statistical or subject-matter journals? We encourage participants across the collaborative spectrum, including those wondering whether a collaborative career is "right" for them.
