    Abstract:

    The basic concept of probability is now universally accepted as the appropriate mathematical measure of uncertainty. However, this modern understanding is in fact historically very recent, and evolved gradually from an earlier, and quite different, perspective. In his new book, Willful Ignorance: The Mismeasure of Uncertainty, Herb Weisberg traces the evolution of modern probability and its momentous effects on statistics and scientific thought. In this talk, Herb will explain how his intellectual journey has led him to the provocative conclusion that traditional statistical methods are due for a major overhaul. He will then entertain questions. Finally, copies of the book will be available for sale, signed by the author.

     

    Speaker Biography:

    Dr. Weisberg received his B.A. in Mathematics from Columbia and Ph.D. in Statistics from Harvard. He has had a long career as a statistical consultant, and published three books related to statistical theory and practice. Herb is a former president of the BCASA (1976-1979) and a Fellow of the ASA. Along with Victor Pontes, he is currently involved in the development and marketing of innovative methods for predictive analytics.

    I will not be able to attend the talk this time, but would be interested in knowing about future opportunities and if either a transcript or recording of the presentation will be available for purchase. I have a copy of the book and am also curious about how closely the talk parallels the hook.
