ASA's Membership Council at JSM 2025
The MC works closely with the ASA Executive Board to execute the ASA mission and the ASA President’s agenda. In her May President’s Corner in Amstat News, President Ji-Hyun Lee talks about Navigating Challenges, Embracing AI, and Shaping the Future. “The rapid evolution of AI, particularly in scale and complexity, demands a strong response from the statistical community.” She notes that developing AI models depends on core statistical issues such as data quality, predictive accuracy, and ensuring reliable outcomes. Our expertise in rigorous evaluation, uncertainty quantification, and bias detection ensures AI systems are built on a solid foundation of statistical reasoning. President Lee’s July corner notes “Statistics, Data Science, and AI: Enriching Society” is both the theme of the 2025 Joint Statistical Meetings and a broader statement about the unique perspectives and solutions statistics offers.

Joint Reception: The Membership Councils’ Committee on Statistics and Disability (CSD), Committee on Membership Retention and Recruitment (CMRR), and Committee on Women in Statistics (CoWiS), along with ASA’s JEDI Outreach group, LGBTQ+ Advocacy Committee and ASA’s Book Club, are hosting a Joint reception Mon 8/4/25 3-4 at Omni Nashville Hotel, H - Mockingbird 3.

CAS – Committee on Applied Statisticians. CAS is sponsoring sessions: Innovative Statistical and Computational Approaches for Multi-modal Data in Ophthalmology Research; Recent Advances in Modeling Multivariate Longitudinal/correlated Outcomes and their Application to Biomedical Research; Novel Methods and Applications for Time Series Data; and Advances and applications of the Win Ratio in clinical studies.

CMRR – Committee on Membership Retention and Recruitment: In addition to co-sponsoring the MC’s Joint Reception, CMRR is co-sponsoring two JSM sessions: Building Strong ASA Student Chapters: Strategies for Growth, Inclusivity, and Maximizing Value" and "Beyond Academia: Exploring Statistics Careers in Industry, Government and More".
CoMiS – Committee on Minorities in Statistics: CoMiS will be conducting the Diversity Mentoring Program at JSM on Mon - Wed 8am to 11am (H - Legends C & D on Mon/Tues, H - Legends F on Wed), and will hold the CoMiS Open Business Meeting on Tues, Aug 5 6 - 7:30pm in H - Legends B. CoMiS is also sponsoring the JSM session: Expanding Our Reach: Sampling, Measurement, and Advocacy for Vulnerable Populations And coming soon! StatFest 2025 will be held virtually across three Thursdays from 7-9pm ET Sept 11, 18, & 25.
CoWiS – Committee on Women in Statistics: In addition to cosponsoring the MC’s Joint Reception, CoWiS is sponsoring an Topic Contributed panel session supporting the JSM theme entitled “An Introduction to the Joint Taskforce (ASA, ACM, SIAM, AMA) on Undergraduate Data Science Curriculum” and the applied session Innovative Statistical Approaches to Mitigate Data Challenges in Women's and Maternal Health

SPAIG – Statistics Partnerships in Academics, Industry, and Government: SPAIG is sponsoring sessions The Past, Present, and Future of Sports Analytics in Industry and the Academy, Harnessing Multi-sector Collaboration in Statistics and Artificial Intelligence for Social Welfare, and More Winners, or Fewer Losers? Mastering Win Ratios in Statistical Analysis: Innovative Methods and Illuminating Case Studies. SPAIG hosts a lunchtime speaker: Cultivating a Career as a Statistical Collaborator and Medical Researcher in the Pharmaceutical Industry (fee). The SPAIG award will be given at Tuesday evening’s award ceremony.

ASA's Membership Council Spring 2025 Updates and Activities
The MC works closely with the ASA Executive Board to execute the ASA mission and the ASA President’s agenda. In her January 2025 President’s Corner in AmstatNews, President Ji-Hyun Lee notes: Our work as statisticians has never been more critical. We stand at the intersection of science and society. Now more than ever, advancing our shared vision of a world that relies on data and statistical thinking to drive discovery and inform decision-making is critical. She states her priorities as:

• Enhancing opportunities: Expanding professional development & leadership programs
• Fostering inclusion: Building a diverse, welcoming community
The Membership Council’s mission aligns with President Lee’s 2025 priorities. The ASA MC committees are excited to work with President Lee in 2025.
CCD - Committee on Career Development The CCD plans to host a virtual webinar in the spring/summer of 2025 with a focus on Job Hunting and Career Development in Uncertain Times. Check the CCD website for details on the annual Professional Networking Event at JSM Sun Aug 3rd.
CAS – Committee on Applied Statisticians: The Committee of Applied Statisticians is planning a four-webinar series Learning Non-Statistics Skills to Succeed on the Job. Check the CAS website for details.
CIRS - Committee on International Relations in Statistics Business Meeting: The CIRS ASA’s 2025 Educational Ambassador program winner will attend JSM 2025. CIRS is planning for a Past Educational Ambassadors’ virtual meeting, to connect and share successes and lessons learned. The CIRS webinar series will continue with recordings of past seminars available on the CIRS website.
CMRR – Committee on Membership Retention and Recruitment: We will share valuable information with current and prospective members about the benefits of maintaining ASA membership by connecting with ASA’s sub-organizations—such as sections, chapters, and committees—as well as through networks on blogs and social media platforms.
CoMiS – Committee on Minorities in Statistics: CoMiS will be conducting the Diversity Mentoring Program at JSM 2025 for students and early career professionals. Applications open through May 15. February’s Amstat News highlighted 14 individuals in their article, “Celebrating Black History Month.”
CoWiS – Committee on Women in Statistics: In an effort to advocate for women in Statistics and Data Science, CoWiS and the Caucus on Women in Statistics (CWS) coordinate on the Gertrude Cox scholarship. CoWiS organized a successful Pi Day virtual networking event – more to come in 2025 including support job-seekers for resumes and upskilling.
CSD - Committee on Statistics and Disability: For July’s 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, CSD is working on a brief history for ASA’s JEDI corner. CSD also plans to highlight statisticians with disabilities in Amstat News for National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October.
JSM CCE – JSM Committee on Continuing Education (ACCE): JSM CCE is organizing 18 full-day and 6 half- day courses for JSM 2025. Be on the lookout at JSM!
SPAIG – Statistics Partnerships in Academics, Industry, and Government: SPAIG is planning three webinars in 2025: 1) role cross-sector collaborations for early career statisticians, 2) cross sector collaboration in AI/ML era, and 3) internships.
