Committee on Applied Statisticians

Charge:
• Promote state of the art methods and technologies benefitting applied statisticians.
• Facilitate the recognition of applied statisticians within various fields of application
• Coordinate with other ASA groups/units to ensure attention to the needs, priorities and career paths of applied statisticians
• Increase awareness and promote careers in applied statistics

Composition: The committee consists of nine members, three of whom are appointed/reappointed by the President Elect to the committee each year for three year terms. A chair is also appointed by the President Elect (when necessary) from among the committee members.

Committee on Privacy and Confidentiality

Charge:

  • To review legislation in the area of privacy and confidentiality and to monitor the application of privacy and confidentiality laws, regulations, and guidelines.
  • To communicate to the ASA members important activities and research funding opportunities in privacy and confidentiality relevant to statistics.
  • To provide an early warning system to the Board of Directors on privacy and confidentiality matters that may affect statisticians.
  • To serve as a focal point within ASA for contact with other associations on matters related to privacy and confidentiality.
  • To monitor and encourage new technical developments related to privacy and confidentiality of data collected or used for statistical purposes.
  • To develop appropriate liaison with Congressional Committees and Federal agencies on matters relating to privacy and confidentiality.
  • To represent ASA in Congressional hearings on privacy and confidentiality, at the request of the Board of Directors.
  • To make suggestions to the Board of Directors for needed study and action in the area of privacy and confidentiality.
Composition: The committee is composed of nine members, three of whom are appointed/reappointed each year by the President Elect for three year terms. One member is also appointed by the President Elect (when necessary) to serve as the Chair. At least one member should be from a U. S. federal statistical agency subject to the CIPSEA. International representation on the Committee is encouraged.

Committee on Professional Ethics

Charge:

  • To provide a point of contact with other societies and associations in the area of professional ethics.
  • To develop and implement a program of education sensitizing members of ASA to the ethical issues in statistical practice and in other fields in which statistics is used.
  • To maintain and promulgate, subject to Board review and approval, the set of ASA Ethical Guidelines that describes the general view of ethics in statistical practice, and develop and maintain supplements to the Ethical Guidelines for areas of application that give an understanding of ethical statistical practice as it applies to that area (e.g., law or medicine).
  • The Committee does not have the authority to act on, rule on, or arbitrate ethical matters.
  • Execution of a program of professional certification is not included in this charge.

Stats. Partnerships Among Academe, Indust. & Govt. Committee

Charge: Identify, lead, and promote initiatives that foster partnerships between academe and business, industry, & government (B/I/G), which would include the following:

  • Establish a partnership award recognizing successful partnership efforts between academe and B/I/G.
  • Promote periodic JSM sessions that focus on partnership case studies and other relevant partnering.
  • Recommend and support periodic salary surveys of B/I/G statisticians.
  • Maintain a SPAIG web site to communicate partnership activities, progress on SPAIG initiatives, the partnership award program, and other SPAIG information.
Composition: The committee has nine members, three of whom are appointed/reappointed each year by the ASA President Elect for three year terms. One member from each of the academe, government and industry sectors should be appointed/reappointed each year. The President Elect will appoint one of the members of the committee to serve as the chair, and the sector represented by the individual chosen as chair should rotate among the three sectors as succeeding chairs are selected. The Chair of the Academic Program Representatives, the Chair of the Corporate Member Representatives, and the Chief Statistician of the Office of Management and Budget or a designate thereof will serve as ex-officio members.

Committee on Scientific Freedom and Human Rights

Charge: The Committee concerns itself with violations of and threats to the scientific freedom and human rights of statisticians and other scientists throughout the world. The Committee also assists scientific societies or other responsible organizations on statistical questions relating to data on human rights or the use of data to limit human rights.

Composition: The committee is composed of nine members, three of whom are appointed/reappointed each year by the President Elect for three year terms. One member is also appointed by the President Elect (when necessary) to serve as the Chair.

Committee on Minorities in Statistics

Charge: To foster greater participation in statistics by members of minority groups that have historically been under-represented in the field of statistics. Encourage research to develop, evaluate and implement policies and interventions to improve the condition of minority populations in the U.S.
