  • Sam Ventura is recognized as the 2018 SIS Significant Contributor

    The Section on Statistics in Sports is pleased to recognize Dr. Samuel Ventura as the Section’s 2018 Significant Contributor. Dr. Ventura earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University in 2015. After graduating, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Statistics until 2017. Since then, he has been the Director of Hockey Research for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.

    Throughout his graduate and professional career, Dr. Ventura has been an exceptional promoter of statistics in sport. He has been an active member of the Section and been a major contributor to multiple JSM sessions sponsored by the section over multiple years. Dr. Ventura has also been a lead organizer of events on sports statistics, especially in the area of hockey analytics. He continues to advise the Carnegie Mellon Sports Analytics Club and act as a mentor for students interested in research careers in sport and statistics.

    Dr. Ventura will be recognized for his contributions at the 2018 JSM Speaker with Lunch event that will be held on Monday July 30th.
