Data Quest

Sponsored by the the American Statistical Association (ASA) Committee on International Relations in Statistics, International Data Quest is set to be an annual data event beginning in the Fall of 2025. Every October, teams of undergraduate and master’s students will work in teams to generate and answer questions using a single large and rich dataset provided by ASA. 

 

The dataset is released on the first Monday of October and (5-minute) video submissions (along with slides) are due last Friday of October. After a month of working with data, each country will pick its winners of undergraduate and master’s level winners in

 

 

Then each country’s winners will compete at the international level with the same video submissions. If you are a student interested in participating in International Data Quest, make sure to check out your country’s registration page and read the frequently asked questions below.

Q: Who can participate in the ASA International Data Quest? 

A: Teams of 2-4 students consisting of either undergraduate OR master's students can participate. Teams cannot mix undergraduate and master's students as these are separate competition categories. Students from any discipline are welcome, not just statistics majors.

Q: When does the competition take place? 

A: The competition runs throughout October. The dataset is released on the first Monday of October, and video submissions are due on the last Friday of October.

Q: What do we need to submit? 

A: Teams must submit a 5-minute video presentation along with slides by the last Friday of October. Other than the cover slide and references your file should have at most 4 slides.

Q: What are the award categories? 

A: There are three award categories, each given separately for undergraduate and master's levels: Best Data Visualization, Best Consideration of Ethics, and Best Statistical Insight
