Launch of the ASA Student Chapter at UIS
The ASA Student Chapter at the University of Illinois Springfield officially launched under the leadership of President Karan Kumar, marking a major milestone for students interested in statistics, data science, epidemiology, and public health analytics. The chapter aims to build a collaborative community where students can gain hands‑on experience, participate in workshops, and engage in research and professional development opportunities. With strong support from Faculty Mentor Dr. Yu‑Sheng Lee, the chapter is positioned to grow into a vibrant hub for quantitative learning on campus.
First SAS Software Workshop Successfully Conducted
The chapter hosted its first SAS Software Workshop, introducing students to essential data analysis skills used in public health, biostatistics, and research. Led by President Karan Kumar, the session covered data cleaning, descriptive statistics, and visualization techniques. Students gained practical experience working with real datasets and learned how SAS can support academic projects, internships, and future careers. Additional workshops are planned for the upcoming semester to expand student proficiency in statistical programming.
Outreach and Recruitment Event Engages New Members
ASA–UIS held an outreach table event on campus to introduce students to the chapter’s mission and upcoming activities. Vice President Gurarpan Kaur led member engagement efforts, answering questions about joining the chapter, participating in workshops, and exploring research opportunities. The event successfully increased visibility and brought new students into the community, strengthening the chapter’s foundation for future initiatives.
