History

The ASA Student Chapter at the University of Illinois Springfield (ASA–UIS) was established to create a dedicated space for students interested in statistics, data science, epidemiology, and public health analytics. Although UIS has long supported quantitative learning through its MPH and data‑focused programs, the formal chapter was created to give students a structured platform for professional development, research collaboration, and engagement with the broader statistical community.

The chapter entered a new phase of growth when Karan Kumar assumed leadership as President. Under his direction, the chapter expanded its mission to include hands‑on workshops, research skill‑building, and interdisciplinary collaboration across public health, computer science, and data analytics. This included the launch of the chapter’s first SAS Software Workshop, outreach events, and the development of a modernized chapter website to improve visibility and student engagement.

Gurarpan Kaur, serving as Vice President, strengthened the chapter’s operational foundation by coordinating events, supporting member activities, and helping build a welcoming environment for students from diverse academic backgrounds. Her contributions helped the chapter grow into a more organized and student‑centered community.

The chapter’s academic direction is guided by Dr. Yu‑Sheng Lee, Faculty Mentor and a respected expert in biostatistics and epidemiology. His mentorship ensures that chapter activities align with ASA standards and support students in developing strong analytical and research competencies.

Today, the ASA–UIS Student Chapter serves as a hub for students who want to explore statistical methods, engage in applied research, and prepare for careers in public health, data science, and related fields. Through workshops, events, and collaborative projects, the chapter continues to build a culture of learning, leadership, and professional excellence.
