Bylaws

Article I — Name

The official name of this organization is the ASA Student Chapter at the University of Illinois Springfield (ASA–UIS).

Article II — Purpose

The chapter exists to promote the understanding and application of statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, and data science; support student learning through workshops and research activities; provide professional development opportunities; and foster a collaborative community aligned with the mission of the American Statistical Association.

Article III — Membership

  1. Membership is open to all UIS students with an interest in statistics, data science, epidemiology, or public health analytics.
  2. Members are encouraged, but not required, to obtain ASA student membership.
  3. Members must uphold professionalism, inclusivity, and academic integrity.
  4. Voting membership is limited to currently enrolled UIS students.

Article IV — Officers

The chapter shall have the following officers:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Faculty Mentor (non‑voting)

Section 1 — Eligibility

All officers must be UIS students in good academic standing.

Section 2 — Duties

President
Provides leadership, oversees chapter activities, coordinates meetings, and represents the chapter at UIS and ASA events.

Vice President
Assists the President, manages member engagement, and supports event planning and operations.

Treasurer
Manages finances, budgets, and funding requests; maintains financial records.

Secretary
Maintains meeting minutes, attendance, communication, and documentation.

Faculty Mentor
Provides academic guidance, ensures alignment with ASA standards, and supports chapter initiatives.

Article V — Elections

  1. Elections are held annually during the spring semester.
  2. All active members may vote.
  3. Officer candidates must be UIS students in good standing.
  4. Vacancies may be filled by special election or appointment with majority approval.

Article VI — Meetings

  1. General meetings shall be held at least once per month during the academic year.
  2. Executive board meetings may be held as needed.
  3. A simple majority of voting members present constitutes a quorum.

Article VII — Committees

Committees may be established as needed to support chapter programming, including but not limited to:

  • Events Committee
  • Outreach Committee
  • Research & Workshops Committee

Committee chairs are appointed by the President with approval from the Executive Board.

Article VIII — Finances

  1. The Treasurer shall maintain accurate financial records.
  2. All expenditures must be approved by the Executive Board.
  3. Funds may be used only for chapter activities, events, and operations.

Article IX — Amendments

  1. Amendments may be proposed by any voting member.
  2. Approval requires a two‑thirds majority vote of members present at a scheduled meeting.
  3. Amendments must comply with UIS policies and ASA guidelines.

Article X — Non‑Discrimination Clause

The chapter shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other protected status in accordance with UIS policies.
