and features diverse presentations of interest to statistics practitioners and researchers of all levels of expertise.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues and learn more about statistical methods, applications, and research projects in the Sacramento area.  I invite you to propose a presentation or discussion topic to share research experiences. These are some examples of presentation categories:

  • APPLICATIONS OF STATISTICAL METHODS AND DATA ANALYSIS

Presentations describe the application of known statistical techniques to data and are welcomed from any field of study.  Past presentations have featured data from Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Epidemiology, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Education, Demography, and Business and Economics.

  • METHODOLOGY

Presentations often introduce a new technique that is demonstrated on real or simulated data or may review previously published methods with a subsequent discussion of how these methods may be extended, adjusted, and/or synthesized to form a new technique.

  • STATISTICAL/ANALYTICAL SOFTWARE

Presentations may involve the demonstration, discussion, or comparison of software of interest to the statistics community.  Such software might include SAS, R, SUDAAN, SPSS, STATA, GIS and MATLAB.  New packages not widely used are also welcome.

  • STATISTICS EDUCATION

Presentations are welcomed from experienced teachers of statistics at any level.  Topics may include the past, present, and/or future of statistics education, incorporating software into a curriculum, or how statistics relates to mathematics education.

INSTITUTE SPEAKERS RECEIVE SEVERAL BENEFITS

The Institute provides an opportunity to share research and stimulate questions and constructive feedback on your research.  Speakers receive free conference registration including continental breakfast, lunch, and afternoon refreshments.

About 150 people with varying degrees of statistical knowledge attend the Institute each year.  There is a combination of plenary sessions and contributed talks that are held in smaller breakout sessions.  Presenters include professors, graduate students, researchers, and professionals from both the public and private sectors.  Presentations are either 25 or 35 minutes, including introduction and discussion.  Proposed roundtable discussions must have at least three participants.

To be considered for participation in our 40th Annual Institute, your proposal must be submitted by February 18, 2019.  Include your name, contact information, proposal title, brief 1-2 paragraph abstract, preference for a 25 or 35minute time slot, requested visual aid equipment, and a very brief biography for introduction purposes.

Send your proposal, electronically, to tuteson@icloud.com. Information on previous Institutes (including abstracts) is available on the SSA website:  https://community.amstat.org/sacramentostatisticalassociation/home. I look forward to receiving a diverse set of proposals and seeing you at the Institute.
