Students Award

UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENT AWARD

The ASA Philadelphia Chapter Student Awards are established to honor outstanding undergraduate students who intend to pursue research careers in quantitative disciplines including but not limited to statistics, biostatistics, and data science, and outstanding graduate students for their accomplishments in research, teaching, participation in departmental and university activities toward professional development in quantitative disciplines including but not limited to statistics, biostatistics, and data science. This award will be given to a maximum of one junior or senior undergraduate student per year with a major or minor in quantitative disciplines as mentioned above, and a maximum of one current master’s or Ph.D. student per year from schools in the greater Philadelphia area. Nominees with demonstrated contributions to the ASA Philadelphia Chapter and chapter activities are favorably reviewed.

 
The award recipient of the undergraduate student award will be chosen based the following criteria:

  • Strong GPA.
  • Strong research experience in statistics, biostatistics, data science or machine learning in various settings, ideally with publications or presentations. 
  • Intent to pursue a research career in statistics, biostatistics, data science, or machine learning.


The award recipient of the graduate student award will be chosen based on satisfying at least three out of the following five criteria in their corresponding field of study:

  • Demonstrate strong research accomplishments and impacts in a manner that substantially exceeds the normal expectation for a graduate student.
  • Demonstrate strong abilities to conduct original, creative, and significant research.
  • Demonstrate strong scholarly, peer-reviewed publications.
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching in a manner that substantially exceeds the typical expectations of a graduate student as an instructor, a teaching assistant, or a tutor.
  • Demonstrate evidence of activities in professional service to the college, university, or profession that substantially exceeds the normal expectation for a graduate student.

 

A complete nomination package will include:
  • A nomination letter up to four pages addressing points in the selection criteria
  • The nominee's resume or curriculum vita
  • One or two additional supporting letters. Each letter should be no longer than two pages.

 

The complete nomination package should be emailed to the ASA Philadelphia Chapter at amstatphiladelphia@gmail.com no later than the announced deadline, usually in early January. Please indicate in the email subject line “ASA Philadelphia Chapter Student Award Nomination”.
