The Mental Health Section of the ASA recently completed its Student Paper Award Competition. In all, twelve papers were received from students world-wide. Students were eligible if they were current undergraduate or graduate students at any level, as well as those who graduated in 2016 but submitted research they conducted as students. The quality of the submissions was remarkable, with many worthy contributions. Each paper was judged in terms of the importance of the problem in mental health and the quality of the statistical methodology, application, and writing. Following a careful and deliberate review process, the section is happy to announce the following two winners of the award as the highest rated papers.
Winners
Gregory Vaughan, Department of Statistics, University of Connecticut
Stagewise Generalized Estimating Equations with Applications to Suicide Prevention
Yi Zhao, Department of Biostatistics, Brown University
Granger Mediation Analysis of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Time Series
In addition, we would like to give honorable mention to another paper that was reviewed very favorably.
Anqi Cheng, Department of Biostatistics, University of Washington

The section offers its congratulations to the deserving awardees, and a cash prize of $1000 has been awarded to each of the two highest rated papers to cover JSM 2017 expenses. The winners will present their research at JSM 2017. The awards will also be announced at the Mental Health Section Mixer at JSM 2017.
