The Departments of Psychiatry and Biostatistics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) and the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) are recruiting one or more faculty members to join the division of Mental Health Data Science. The appointee to the Division of Mental Health Data Science will hold an inter-disciplinary faculty appointment in the Departments of Psychiatry and Biostatistics at CUIMC and also may hold a state position through NYSPI. The level (full rank, associate, or assistant) and track (tenure or non-tenure), will be commensurate with credentials and experience.
Mental Health Data Science at CUIMC/NYSPI has 5 full-time Ph.D. level biostatistics faculty members (all with inter-disciplinary professor appointments in Biostatistics and Psychiatry) and 8 full-time data analysts (https://www.columbiapsychiatry.org/mental-health-data-science) collaborating on predominately NIH funded research projects related to psychiatry. As technologies for real-time and dynamic data collection have exponentially expanded over the last decade, the complexity and sheer size of these Big Data have expanded as well. For example, electronic medical records, multimodal brain imaging, ecological momentary assessment via smart phones, and neurological monitoring devices all hold much promise for research but pose serious data collection, processing, and analytic challenges that must be addressed if the field of psychiatric research is to make optimal use of the information encoded in these sources.
The mission of Mental Health Data Science is to embrace new data collection and processing technologies – specifically with applications in psychiatric research - and provide expertise in applying and developing data analytic tools (including high-dimensional data analysis, machine learning, integrative data analysis) for making sense of these complex data domains while remaining grounded in effective core statistical methods and ensuring reproducibility and transparency of results.
The appointee will perform the following functions: provide biostatistical collaboration with investigators in the CUIMC Psychiatry Department and NYSPI (http://columbiapsychiatry.org/); conduct research and seek grant funding in biostatistical methods relevant to applications in psychiatry; provide services in teaching, training and mentoring functions; and provide services in administrative committees.
Eligible candidates must have the following qualifications: a doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, computer science, or a related discipline; a record of independent and collaborative research; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and an interest in developing and applying statistical methods to important problems in psychiatric research.
