We're happy to share our recently published work on self-reported perception of statistical literacy among U.S. adults. We found that a large majority of U.S. adults reported limited familiarity with statistics, which is consistent with objective numeracy measures that include statistical components. We also found a similarly large majority who indicated willingness to use statistical information for decision-making if they understood statistics better. Together, we optimistically interpret these findings as encouraging. People readily acknowledge limited familiarity with statistics while being open to engaging with statistical information when it is communicated in ways they can understand. We believe this is an opportunity to advance statistics education by fostering more accessible and engaging ways of communicating statistical concepts and analysis to the public.
