Applied statisticians must collaborate to help answer their organization's research and business questions. With strong partnership, we can proactively seek fellow collaborators, work together to develop the research questions, design the analyses, and interpret the results. To be a successful collaborator, statisticians must also think holistically by contributing to the overall project rather than focusing only on the statistical components of the project.

To collaborate successfully, it is important to communicate clearly, know how to develop rapport, negotiate, understand cultural differences, and much more. CAS has developed a Collaboration Initiative to develop these essential skills. This training program includes a series of free, one-hour webinars, listed below, to enhance the important collaboration skills that all applied statisticians need to be successful. Here is the information on our first scheduled webinar:

    Title: "Structuring Effective Meetings"

Date: September 15, 2017 Time: 1:00-2:00PM EDT Presenters: Eric Vance (University of Colorado Boulder) and Heather Smith (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo) Abstract:  This webinar is for statisticians and data scientists whose goal is to increase their impact on projects by improving the way they collaborate with others. We believe that structuring a problem and then structuring a meeting with a domain expert are first steps toward establishing collaborative working relationships. We will introduce the QQQ process, which is effective structure for any applied statistics or consulting problem. We will also cover the POWER structure, which provides an easy-to-use method for organizing a meeting for success. With these structures in place to support collaboration, statisticians can free their brains to focus on the context of the problem and the details that lead to effective statistical solutions to answer the domain experts' research, business, or policy questions. We have found that by using such processes and structures, statisticians can increase their impact on projects and improve their collaborative relationships with others.
