The Rochester Chapter of the American Statistical Association (ASA) is delighted to organize and host their workshop of the year 2021 featuring the theme “Transforming the Intro Stat Experience” and exclusively prepared and tailored to two year college professors of statistics.
Spearheaded by St John Fisher College Professor Bruce Evan Blaine under the Chapter’s “Statistical Literary for the 21st Century” initiative, This workshop seeks to bring together professors of statistics operating at two year colleges to provide them with exposure to state of the art approaches to teaching introductory statistics courses with emphasis on intuitive modern computational tools as well as data science minded tools, methods, techniques and themes. It is hoped that upon taking part in this workshop, the participating two year college professors will then update their teaching approaches and gradually move beyond calculators to more modern data science minded and data driven approaches, thereby preparing their students for either transfer to four your colleges or even data technician jobs in some cases.
The workshop ultimately intends to create, facilitate and coordinate a network of introductory statistics instructors united by their awareness and commitment to the changing and data science minded nature of statistics education. This network will match participants with mentors, and the mentor-mentee connection is hoped to go on after the workshop and even lead to presentations at our annual UP STAT 2021 conference in April 2021.
