Abstract: The National Institute on Aging (NIA) supports research on behavioral and organizational interventions to help individuals meet the challenges of aging and to adopt changes leading to improved health outcomes. NIA's intervention development research program is guided by the NIH Stage Model, a six-stage intervention framework to encourage a focus understanding "how and why" interventions exert effects during the intervention development process. Understanding how and why interventions work, sometimes called the principle(s) or mechanisms of behavior change (MoBCs) of an intervention, is meant to create potent interventions that can be implemented efficiently in the settings where they are needed. This talk will cover key elements of the NIH Stage Model and address six behavioral interventions research topics essential to a full understanding of the Model: 1) NIH Stage Model Goals, 2) Stages, 3) MoBCs, 4) Fidelity, 5) Methodology, and 6) Scalability.
