  • 1.  Tribute to Ralph D'Agostino Sr. 1940-2023

    Hi all:

    I have been waiting for too long for Statistics in Medicine (SIM ) to pay a well-deserved tribute to the late Professor Ralph D'Agostino, Senior.  No tribute from SIM  was paid to him for his 22 years of service as editor, and even in his 9/23  death, nothing has appeared in SIM.  Below are three links: (1) In the recent Research.com ratings of Top Medical Researchers, Ralph was the highest American Biostatistician on the list (at #14); (2) A tribute to Ralph from the AmStat News (May 2020, See Pages 28 and 29); and (3) His OBIT from 9/23.

     

    Not many statisticians or biostatisticians get to see a child becoming a top-notch statistician or biostatistician. Somehow, Ralph and my good friend Malay Ghosh succeeded. I thought that perhaps one of my very quantitative kids would, but despite all that dinner conversation, it did not happen for either.  So as in the Honeymooners, another Ralph (Kramden) used to say to his TV wife Alice, "Baby, you're the greatest"!

    Your beautiful tribute is very moving and memorable.  The links you provided are outstanding.  In times like this, we all need friends as loyal and caring as you obviously were with Professor D'Agostino, Senior.  Thank you for sharing with this auspicious group.  You greatly honor us all simply by including us.

    I agree also with your sentiments.  After Professor D'Agostino's long history with Statistics in Medicine as an Editor, it is strange they have yet put forth any special issue for him.  It seems like the current Editorial Board is disconnected from his legacy.  I know his family have written and put up several tributes which you can find online.  We are also working on nice long bio about him.  We can always continue to honor him and just your writing about him today is like doing as such.  As one of his former advisees, I appreciate what you wrote.  Thank you.
