Colleagues,
AI is on everyone's mind, and it is especially top-of-mind for statisticians and data scientists as we consider the future of our work. To that end, I wanted to point out four resources from the ASA and the RSS.
· 2026 ASA President Jeri Mulrow's March Amstat News President's Corner "Stewards of Uncertainty: Our Role in the Age of AI." ("by continuing our commitment to timely professional development and access to career opportunities, we must attend to the well-being of our members during this period of rapid change. The anxiety and uncertainty many feel are real and should be acknowledged.")
· "AI is Statistics" report from the Royal Statistical Society ("as AIs get used in an increasingly wide range of situations – recruitment, health care, credit lending, insurance pricing, the justice system, education, decisions about welfare entitlement, etc. – it is going to require everyone to think more like statisticians to use this technology effectively and ethically.")
· ASA's statement on ethical AI principles for statistical practitioners ("Methods and technologies should be developed in ways that promote fairness and equity among those affected by the use of AI technologies.")
· ASA's statement on the role of statistics and data science in AI ("the interdisciplinary nature of data science and AI means a substantial collaborative effort is needed")
In addition, I have found this blog useful:
· Ethan Mollick's "One Useful Thing" Substack blog ("the question "which AI should I use?" has gotten harder to answer, because the answer now depends on what you're trying to do with it. So let me walk through the landscape.")
I hope you find these helpful. Please use this community space to share resources that you have found useful.
