CE_20C: Data Integration in Surveys and Clinical Trials: Methods and Software

Abstract: Integrating multiple data sources becomes a research priority. Recently high-quality probability surveys have struggled with increasing costs and nonresponse rates. Large non-probability surveys can be combined with probability surveys to provide information about comparatively uncommon but important segments of the population. An important special case of this is integrating clinical trials with observational data to achieving population generalizability and transportability across different individual groups. Illustrated with different application studies from surveys to clinical trials, we investigate the heterogeneity and shared common quantities across multiple data sources. The course will introduce fundamental concepts and quality criteria for an integrated data infrastructure. We review data integration methods including record linkage, statistical matching, and data fusion. We focus on recent developments in quasi-weighting, multilevel regression and poststratification, and doubly robust approaches. We provide hands-on and interactive experiences with computational software tools to implement and compare different methods. The prerequisite of this course includes coursework in graduate-level applied statistics. The course will be presented at a moderately advanced statistical level.
