Traditionally, since early voting started to increase in the late 1990s, traditional single frame landline RDD, and then dual frame landline and cell phone RDD, surveys were conducted in the week before the elections in states where a meaningful proportion of voting would be done "early." Then the organizations doing the Election Night projections (Voter New Service, and then Edison Media Research) would incorporate those results in with their Election Day exit polls.
