Tree-based approaches such as traditional CART™ produce interpretable models but can fall short in accuracy. Developments such as Random Forests improve accuracy but can lack interpretability. Professor Loh presents methods that combine accuracy and interpretability while featuring desirable properties such as unbiasedness in predictor selection and accommodating missing values in the predictors. The workshop presents real examples from different subject domains including health records, consumer expenditure survey data, and vehicle crash test data.
