| CALL FOR NOMINATIONS Ensuring the Quality, Credibility, and Relevance of U.S. Homeland Security Statistics |
|
|
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking nominations for experts for a new consensus study to assess the capacity of the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Office for Homeland Security Statistics (OHSS) to provide official statistics aligned with federal standards. The committee will assess OHSS's current capabilities and identify practical steps to enhance the relevance, credibility, objectivity, and public trust of their statistics to support evidence-based decision making. The report will offer recommendations for improving OHSS's statistical operations and provide a roadmap for implementation.
Taking into account these suggestions, National Academies staff will build a committee of approximately 10-12 experts. In addition, nominations will be used to identify potential speakers and peer reviewers for any publications resulting from the activity.
Based on the Statement of Task, we are looking for expertise in the following areas: - DHS programmatic and policy context
- Users and stakeholders of DHS statistics
- U.S. federal statistical system
- Statistical laws and regulatory frameworks
- Data governance
- Data access and confidentiality
- Data integration and linkage
- Statistical methodologies
Please submit all nominations (for yourself or others) through the online nomination form by January 8, 2025.

The Committee on National Statistics was established in 1972 at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to improve the statistical methods and information on which public policy decisions are based. The committee carries out studies, workshops, and other activities to foster better measures and fuller understanding of the economy, the environment, public health, crime, education, immigration, poverty, welfare, and other public policy issues. It also evaluates ongoing statistical programs and tracks the statistical policy and coordinating activities of the federal government, serving a unique role at the intersection of statistics and public policy. The committee's work is supported by a consortium of federal agencies through a National Science Foundation grant, a National Agricultural Statistics Service cooperative agreement, and several individual contracts. |
