NEW ROUNDTABLE
Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that has the potential to revolutionize the approach to many climate-related actions-from optimizing energy use to predicting extreme weather. As we harness and expand the applications for AI technologies, it is essential to make sure these models are accurate and reliable and find ways to mitigate the climate impacts of AI data center energy use. The National Academies are excited to announce the formation of a new Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change. The roundtable brings together experts from research, industry, philanthropic, and policy spaces to foster collaboration and support decision-making around critical topics at the intersection of AI and climate change. The roundtable invites you to join them for an open session on Monday, May 5, 2025 from 10am-12:30pm ET to discuss how new advances in AI can help solve climate challenges and the latest developments around AI data center energy use.

Climate Conversation: Powering AI
Increasing investment in artificial intelligence (AI) is prompting a larger discussion around sustainability, from the huge demand for electricity to power data centers to the life cycle emissions of hardware needed to enable this technology. Globally, companies and governments are preparing for significant increases in energy use and raw material extraction to meet demand. On the other hand, evolving technology and breakthroughs in AI optimization could lead to lower emissions than previously anticipated.
Join the National Academies for a climate conversation on Monday, April 28 from 3-4:15pm ET. During the event, roundtable member Yury Dvorkin (Johns Hopkins University) and Cooper Elsworth (Carbon Data Solutions at Google) will discuss opportunities to decarbonize AI and how leaders in the field are navigating the uncertainty. The discussion will be moderated by Kristin Hayes (Resources for the Future).
