Dear Colleagues,
Four students from my Introduction to Data Science course (STAT 3255/5255) at the University of Connecticut will present their mid-term project, "Risk Analysis of NYC Street Flooding," at NYC Open Data Week 2025. Details of the project are at: https://statds.github.io/ids-s25/exercises.html.
Date & Time: March 24, 2025, 2:00–3:00 PM (ET)
Location: Virtual (Registration Required: https://2025.open-data.nyc/event/risk-analysis-of-nyc-street-flooding/)
This event continues a tradition of UConn students showcasing their work at NYC Open Data Week, demonstrating how introductory-level data science education can engage students with real-world problems. Students will present their analysis of NYC street flooding risk, applying data cleaning, exploratory analysis, and predictive modeling techniques. Their work highlights the power of open data in understanding urban challenges and reflects our commitment to innovative, accessible data science education.
This session is designed for a general audience with no programming prerequisites; anyone interested in data-driven insights into urban flooding or data science in general is welcome to join.
NYC Open Data Week is an annual festival celebrating open data and its role in making New York City more transparent and accessible. Hosted by the NYC Open Data Team and BetaNYC, the event brings together researchers, students, community leaders, and policymakers to explore innovative ways to use public data for social good.
