    Posted 09-23-2025 20:44

    To help celebrate the 4th World Statistics Day on October 20, 2025, the LISA 2020 Global Network is organizing its 2025 Symposium with a theme of "Statisticians in the Age of AI."

    As a virtual event, everyone is invited! The link for registering is: https://bit.ly/2025LISA2020Symposium

    There will be plenary talks, a keynote by Prof. David Banks from Duke University, and parallel sessions for contributed papers spread over three days: October 20, 22, and 24 at 14:00 UTC, which corresponds to 10AM U.S. Eastern Time. We also have six tutorials on various topics scheduled for October 15, 17, 21, 23, 28, and 30.

    Submit an abstract by September 30 to get onto the program with the potential for contributing a chapter to a future book/proceedings from the LISA 2020 Global Network.

    More information and an updated schedule is available at https://www.lisa2020.org/symposium/2025-lisa-2020-symposium

    What is World Statistics Day?

    World Statistics Day was designated by the UN General Assembly to recognize the importance of statistics and its role in shaping societies by contributing to economic, social, and environmental development. Celebrated every five years since 20 October 2010, the 4th World Statistics Day will be celebrated on 20 October 2025.

    What is the LISA 2020 Global Network?

    The LISA 2020 Global Network believes that statistics and data science collaboration laboratories ("stat labs") have the potential to transform society to make better use of data for sustainable development. Networks of stat labs can leverage the strengths and synergies of other labs for both local and global impact.

    Started in 2012, the LISA 2020 Global Network has grown from two stat labs in developing countries in 2014 to 28 in 2020 and now 36 in 2025 (see chapter 2 of our first book for more details). The LISA 2020 Global Network builds partnerships among the University of Colorado Boulder Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) and universities in developing countries to create stat labs that simultaneously develop capacity in statistics and data science and leverage it to solve local development challenges. Shared learning from the stat labs strengthens and helps grow the LISA 2020 Global Network. Each stat lab acts as an engine for development by progressing toward three missions:

    1.   Train statisticians and data scientists to become effective, interdisciplinary collaborators who can move between theory and practice to solve problems for real-world impact;

    2.   Serve as research infrastructure for researchers and decision-makers to collaborate with statisticians and data scientists to enable and accelerate research and data-based decisions that make a positive impact on society;

    3.   Teach short courses and workshops to improve statistical skills and data literacy widely.

    Between 2019 and 2024, the 36 LISA 2020 labs reported training 4,752 students to become collaborative statisticians and data scientists. The labs worked on more than 2,772 projects resulting in at least 345 peer-reviewed publications that included stat lab faculty and students as co-authors. These labs taught 724 short courses, workshops, or multi-day workshops taught to 23,426 attendees.
