NISS Short Course: Prediction-Based Inference: Methods & Applications
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly used to generate predictions that serve as inputs for scientific and biomedical research. While this approach can expand research opportunities and reduce data collection burdens, it also raises important questions about bias, uncertainty, and the validity of statistical inference.
Join us on August 28, 2026, for a practical short course led by Jesse Gronsbell (University of Toronto), Jianhui Gao (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health), and Stephen Salerno (Washington University in St. Louis). Participants will learn methods for conducting valid inference with AI/ML-generated outcomes and gain hands-on experience using the ipd R package.
Topics include:
- Understanding the limitations of using predicted data for inference
- Correcting bias and obtaining valid uncertainty estimates
- Applying prediction-based inference methods to continuous and binary outcomes
- Interpreting and visualizing prediction-based inference results
