Subject: Encouraging member comment on proposed rule for federal grantmaking
Dear All,
As I wrote a few weeks ago, the broad campaign of the scientific community regarding the OMB proposed rule on grantmaking is now focusing on Congress. To that end, please see the pasted content below from a LinkedIn post from Research!America regarding a webinar they are hosting next week that will include a phonebank for you to contact your Members of Congress.
Thanks,
Steve
📣 Calling all researchers and advocates! Join Research!America for a webinar on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 1:30 p.m. ET. Instead of our usual discussion, we're doing something different: an interactive advocacy training and phonebank focused on contacting members of Congress about the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) proposed rule, "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance." This rule could upend how federal research gets funded, from grant terminations to political interference in merit review.
Whether you're new to advocacy, looking to sharpen your skills, or just want some dedicated time to do outreach with others, this session is for you. We will be joined by Erin Darbouze, MPH, who will share practical tips and tricks for effective in-district advocacy, with plenty of time for your questions. Then we'll wrap up with a group phonebank. ☎️ This is your chance to make your voice heard alongside fellow researchers and advocates.
All are welcome! Register today: https://lnkd.in/eYixhu35

Dear ASA Members,
Thanks to the many of you who submitted comments to the White House Office of Management and Budget on the proposed rule on grantmaking. I write now to ask members in the US to join the broader-community campaign by sharing your comments (or those of the ASA) with your elected members of Congress-both Senators and your US Representative-and ask their help for the proposed rule to be withdrawn. You can use the contact feature on their website for such messages and you can find their website on the House of Representatives website (or enter your ZIP code at www.house.gov/representatives/find) and on the US Senate website. Calling their offices is also helpful. (As a reminder to federal government employees, do not use government resources or time to communicate to your elected federal officials.)
The ASA Comments are available here: 6/30/26 and 7/13/26.
As I hope you read in last week's ASA Science Policy + Advocacy email from me, the scientific community organized a robust response to the proposed rule: White House receives 497,000 comments on rules many fear would politicize science (Science); Flood of comments on White House grantmaking overhaul is largely negative, analysis shows (STAT News); The Public Rejects OMB's Federal Financial Assistance Rule (Tech Policy).
Thank you for your consideration.
Steve

Dear Members,
ASA's comments on this proposed rule have been submitted. They are attached to this message and will soon be posted to the ASA website. (They were also shared on LinkedIn.) Thanks to the members of the Scientific and Public Affairs Advisory Committee for their extensive work to draft these comments.
We also thank the many of you who submitted comments. As of Monday morning, 292,000 had been submitted.
Steve
