Dear ASA Members,
The ASA and the broader scientific community are alarmed by the proposed rule on grantmaking from the White House Office of Management and Budget:
Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance. The fact that there are already 26,000 comments reflects the level of concern. The rule has broad, far-reaching ramifications on grantmaking, including on the scientific peer-review process, conferences, and publishing.
Thanks to the many members who have contacted ASA leadership on the rule and
shared on ASA Connect. As stated in ASA Connect, the ASA will respond and we're grateful to the Committee on Scientific and Public Affairs Advisory Committee for their willingness to take a lead role.
I write now to urge you, our members, to also comment, an action scores of other scholarly societies are also taking. The larger the number of responses and the more varied and substantive, the stronger the message will be. So please respond and encourage those in your network to do so. The process is straightforward to do from the
link for the proposed rule but reach out to me with any questions. As an alternative, we hope to soon be sharing tools to make it all the easier to reply while also individualizing the response so it is not classified as just a repeat of what others are saying. The first I've seen so far is
this one from the American Geophysical Union.
Comments are due July13 and we will be keeping you updated and repeating this request. I should also note the ASA has signed onto a letter to OMB with 300 other organizations urging the deadline be extended.
The following are a selection of the many information pieces and other resources available on the proposed rule:
Thank you,
Steve
