Do you have experience teaching statistics or data science courses that involve community partners? If so, we have an amazing opportunity for you!
Thanks to the support of the RIOS Institute (Institute for a Racially Just, Inclusive, and Open STEM Education), we are establishing a working group for the 2026-2027 academic year to develop an online handbook on community engaged statistics and data science courses (CESDS). We are defining CEDS as courses that use/build statistics and data science skills to co-create sustainable solutions to community-identified questions through partnerships with community members & organizations.
The primary goal of the working group, led by Laurie Baker, Claire Kelling, Emily Robinson, and Tyler George, is to develop a shared, adaptable framework and resource hub for instructors of community-engaged courses in statistics and data science (CESDS) at the undergraduate level. In addition, the working group will bring together educators who teach CESDS courses to share experiences, challenges, existing materials, and identify common structures, gaps, and best practices across institutions. The working group aims to create an adaptable CESDS Handbook that facilitates the integration of technical/analytical training with collaborative, ethical, and sustainable practices across the full data science/statistics life cycle.
The working group will meet for six 90-minute sessions (3 in the fall and 3 in the spring) to collaborate on the project. We will also expect each other to complete work between meetings to finish the handbook within the year.
Thanks to the RIOS Institute, we can offer a small stipend to a total of 8 participating members.
