In my decades of teaching statistical science, I often opened a class session by discussing some real use of statistics, good or bad, that was related to that week's mainstream news or to an important new scientific paper. Today's New York Times has an excellent graphic, attached. My only criticism, which is nit-picky, is that I would have made each line's label the same color as that line.
