We are DePaul ASA-STATCOM, a DePaul's student organization combining American Statistical Association (ASA) and Statistics in the Community (STATCOM). ASA is the world’s largest community of statisticians. STATCOM is a student organization started at Purdue University in 2001, and STATCOM Chicago was launched at DePaul University in 2008. As some of you may know, STATCOM provides statistics graduate students’ expertise to local businesses and organizations free of charge. STATCOM members work in teams with various area companies and organizations on statistical research projects. Former members have attributed STATCOM to improving their communication skills, leadership abilities, and their effectiveness in working in groups.
Our organization is officially registered with ASA to work as its student chapter here at DePaul University. We provide opportunities for students to interact with prominent statisticians locally and at national meetings, as well as provides career information in the statistical sciences. Here are some benefits we'd like to offer to our members:
- Members of the chapter can join the ASAfor only $25 per year.
- Getting in touch with practical projects and data from real world by engaging in the projects we provided.
- R-/Python-/SAS- tutorials for students to enhance their course preparation and job seeking in statistics/data science field.
- We will invite people who work in different industries to give speeches on their real work and share with you about skills demanding in their companies. They may accept resumes after the speeches.
- Job/internship opportunities specifically for our members.
It is our pleasure to invite you to our kickoff meeting on Wednesday, September 19th, from 4:00pm to 4:40pm. Some key points we want to share with you at the meeting:

- How to become a member/board member
- Events we are planning to organize this year
The room will be announced later by email. We are looking for board members (Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) for the organization. Everyone is welcome to self-nominate, and we highly recommend first-year students to participate in the board. DataFest2018 Kickoff meeting

The ASA DataFest 2018 will be held at Loyola University from March 23rd to 25th. It is a great opportunity to get involved with real-life data analysis and to develop valuable skills of teamwork and presentation. You can access the official website of this event through HERE.
To help you get well prepared for DataFest, the DePaul ASA-STACOM would like to invite you to a kickoff meeting on March 1st. During the meeting, we will share with you more information about the following aspects:
- Introducing the ASA DataFest event
- Candidate registration
- Looking for teammates
- A small practice project (we will provide data and feedback/advice from professors)
Please feel free to come to the meeting and find some cool people to assemble your team. Of course, you are also welcome to bring your premade teammates.

It is a great pleasure that we invite you to the kickoff meeting of DePaul ASA-STATCOM on Wednesday, January 10. This year, we started this combined student chapter and we are looking forward to more exciting events!
Our president Yang Zhao will share with you the history and task of ASA-STATCOM, and how it will benefit our members. All students who are passionate about statistics are welcome to fill out the membership application at the kick-off meeting.
We will also give a brief introduction to the DataFest that will be held in Loyola at the end of this March. DataFest is an annual data-analysis competition sponsored by ASA, and the participants join the event in the form of teams. It gives the participants a great opportunity to analyze big data from the real world. We encourage our members to participate in this event.
