    Posted 07-22-2020 13:44

    Hi all!

We have unprecendented interest in the ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education Mentoring Program this year and need 15-20 more mentors! If you haven't already done so, please consider filling out the (short!) participation form before July 31 to note your interest in being a mentor. You may access the form using the following link: https://forms.gle/wa5AEaTQMkXBHuPj9

The program operates on a calendar year from August 1, 2020 – June 1, 2021. To participate, ASA membership is required, as is membership in the ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education.

Mentees who applied to participate in the upcoming academic year have noted interests across a wide variety of areas and levels of teaching:

    • Graduate Teaching: early/mid career goals, biostatistics, teaching with R/Python

    • High School Teaching: general teaching strategies, enhancing a DS program at their school, how to do standards based grading, projects, active learning, Python programming, pedagogy, incorporating biology/environmental science with statistics

    • Undergraduate Teaching: Research at an R1 school, stat ed and data science research, active learning ideas, career movement (including the tenure-track process), teaching and starting a DS program, researching/modeling animal movement, "cognitive development needed to understand confidence intervals", biostatistics, getting students involved in research, making connections to industry partners, using R in class, online teaching

    • Other Interests: career advice/advancement, leadership/management/communication skills, career goals, working within mental health with veterans, public health (neurology, psychiatry), government or industrial research (with ML and Bayesian Statistics), study of how Africa can utilize stats and DS

The mentoring program is a great opportunity to share your experiences and interact with others in the statistics and data science education community! Please see the email below for more information and let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for considering this opportunity!

ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education

    ASA Members,

We are excited to invite interested mentees and mentors to apply to participate in the mentoring program of the ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education for the upcoming year! Now in its fourth year, the program aims to connect statistics and data science educators in the broader statistical and data science community including, but not limited to, K-12 schools, AP programs, community colleges, undergraduate and graduate programs, industry and government. Graduate students are also welcome!

    Program and Participant Information

The program operates on a calendar year from August 1, 2020 – June 1, 2021. To participate, ASA membership is required, as is membership in the ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education.

    • Mentors are typically senior statistics and data science educators who are encouraged to support mentees in a number of ways. This may include meeting online several times per semester. Discussion may include exploring career options, providing advice during a job search or on the first job, offering suggestions for research and pedagogical initiatives, or answering other content-specific questions. Most importantly, the mentor can help answer questions and make connections with the larger statistics and data science education community.

We try to match mentors and mentees based on a number of criteria, including career interests, geographical location, and/or research area, with the goal of matching in at least one of these areas.

    Next Steps

We are looking for section members to participate in one of two ways:

    1. Those who would like to be mentored (a mentee).
    2. Those who would be willing to serve as a mentor.

If you're interested in participating in the mentoring program, please fill out the application form which can be found at the following link: Click Here to Apply. Priority will be given to those who apply before May 31, 2020, but applications will be accepted throughout the summer. Every effort will be made to match those who apply by May 31st.  Note:  If you are currently in the mentoring program and would like to continue, please fill out the application form again.

Additional details of the program can be found at: community.amstat.org/statisticaleducationsection/home.

Please contact Michael Jiroutek (jiroutekm@campbell.edu) or Jennifer Green (jgreen@montana.edu) if you have questions regarding the program.

    Thank you for your interest!
