    Hello,

Does anybody have experience running SAS on AWS?
I've looked through documentation on AWS and SAS.com, and didn't find any good starter guides.

For example, I'm still not sure what I need to simply start up (do I need to buy SAS?)

    Sincerely,

    Barry

You can purchase a license to SAS and install it to run on AWS, but I think you are referring to SAS Software as a Service. In that case, you simply create an account at SAS for this use. This page offers high-level descriptions with links to more detailed information. You can also connect with someone at SAS through the same page to get personal help with your question.

It depends on what you do with it. I've set up and used SAS University Edition on AWS. SAS UE is free for academic, noncommercial use. Instructions for getting started are here: https://support.sas.com/software/products/university-edition/faq/AWS_runvApp.htm

For commercial use, you will need to purchase a license from SAS. And that is beyond the scope of my knowledge!

Assuming you are at a university, SAS is available pre-installed on the AWS Marketplace for about $0.30 / day.

You will probably need to fiddle with the network security rules before you are able to shell in / do anything useful.

Happy to chat if you get stuck.

There seems to be some confusion about the cost of SAS University Edition. The University Edition is FREE for academic noncommercial use.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will allow you to run the University Edition FREE for one year if you don't already have an AWS account (and if you use a t2.micro AWS instance). After one year, running on AWS will cost a small amount if you keep the instance running, but will accumulate no charges if you stop your AWS instance.

You can also install the University Edition free of charge for academic noncommercial use on your own computer (Windows, OS X, or Linux). This is completely free and is arguably slightly more efficient because you don't need to fiddle with AWS. Running on a local machine is a little clunky to start and stop because it runs in a virtual machine. But it has all the power of SAS Studio, Base SAS, SAS/STAT, SAS/IML (Interactive Matrix Language), SAS/ACCESS, and several time series forecasting procedures from SAS/ETS.

SAS University Edition users can use the superb SAS documentation, which is available for free here.  Compare the SAS documentation for your favorite statistical procedure with the documentation for the procedure in another language (e.g., R). Which documentation would be easier for statistics students to understand (if they have a proper documentation roadmap)?

The details for installing the University Edition on a local computer or on AWS are here

I love SAS (and R and SPSS and BMDP).
