Title: Improved Estimation of System Reliability Via Shrinkage

Speaker: Dr. Beidi Qiang

Abstract:

For a coherent reliability system composed of several components configured according to some structure function, its time-to-failure or system life distribution is usually of interest. This distribution may be estimated by simply using observations of the system lifetimes. However, if component lifetime data is available, a better estimator of the system failure time may be obtained. In this talk, we demonstrate that shrinkage ideas that are commonly used in simultaneous estimation may be exploited to gain more efficiency in the estimation of the system reliability function. The approach is discussed under parametric assumptions about the component time-to-failure distributions and further explored in nonparametric settings
